We collect information you provide directly when you use HalalBite:
- Account information — your name, email address, and profile details when you create an account.
- Reviews and content — the reviews, ratings, and photos you submit for restaurants.
- Location data — your approximate location when you use the map feature, only with your permission.
- Usage data — basic analytics about how you interact with the app to help us improve the experience.
How We Use Your Information
- Provide, maintain, and improve the HalalBite service.
- Display restaurants near you on the map.
- Show your reviews and ratings to other community members.
- Send important service updates and notifications you've opted into.
- Improve the overall user experience based on aggregated usage patterns.
Information Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We only share information with trusted service providers that help us operate HalalBite:
- Supabase — database hosting and authentication.
- Mapbox — map rendering and geocoding services.
- PostHog — privacy-friendly product analytics (page views, feature usage). Only activated after you accept cookies.
These providers only access the data necessary to perform their services and are bound by their own privacy policies.
Data Security
We take the security of your data seriously. All data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Authentication is handled securely through Supabase Auth, and passwords are never stored in plain text. While no system is perfectly secure, we follow industry best practices to protect your information.
Cookies & Analytics
HalalBite uses the following cookies:
- Authentication cookies — essential for keeping you signed in. These cannot be disabled.
- Analytics cookies (PostHog) — help us understand how people use HalalBite so we can improve it. These are only set after you accept the cookie banner.
- Consent preference — remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics cookies.
To change your cookie preference, clear your browser's local storage for halalbite.app and the cookie banner will appear again.
Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. Analytics data is automatically deleted after 12 months. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data within 30 days, though anonymised analytics may be retained.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Update or correct your account information at any time.
- Delete your account and associated data by contacting us.
- Opt out of non-essential communications.
